Real estate in my tank for montis is starting to become a bit sparse. I am reluctant to place too far up as they will shade out everything below. Anyone have experiences to share about attaching the directly to the overflows/glass?

I did that in my old 75 and put the monti cap up too high near the corner and it shaded the entire back right corner of the tank. t used a Magfloat and glued the frag to it. It quickly spread onto the glass. Here is a pic:

I glued an Orange and Green one on my back wall. The Orange outgrew the green and is starting to shelve out now.
