Those are really nice.....I don't know anything about cross stitching but do you start with a template or is it all "freehand"?

Thank you! These are usually created using a template called a chart.They look like graph paper and can be designed by hand this way.Many companies nowadays will convert a artist's work using computers.
The charts can be very basic like a old school video game sprite.

They may also be extremely challenging like this 48 paged project.

Love your work, your projects always turn out looking so good. You must have a knack for this type of thread work, I know it takes determination and many hours to finish one of these. One day I will pick one up and try it myself, a little 8 bit pattern to start off easy perhaps... Or a band logo.

Snowflake from Cross Stitcher Magazine #257.X-Mas 2012 Designed by Fiona Crouch

A Tiger eye. In order to finish this in time to for Christmas,I converted the chart from 30+ colors down to about 7. I think that it turned out okay.Designed by Barbara Sestok,from Cross-Stitch +NEEDLEWORK Magazine,May 2010.
