Hi Everybody!

I purchase some ceramic frag plugs in bulk. Normally I 'cycle' my plugs before use and since I am going to prep several hundred to use I figured I should soak them before throwing them into my tank to cycle.

Basically, I put 500 of these ceramic plugs into a bucket of fresh saltwater (plain Instant Ocean Salt, not Reef Crystals) for about six weeks. I went to pull them out by the handful and I was impaled by several teeny tiny crystals. The picture below is a nice formation on one of them.

These crystals are hard, tiny and very sharp, I'm sure they would really mess a fish up and likely coral flesh as well. I really don't know what to make of this. I put the plug pictured into RO/DI water and it took two days to dissolve the crystals.

I emailed the manufacturer a few days ago, but haven't heard back yet.
