Hi everyone, so I am getting ready to order a Sumatra Regal Angelfish and was wondering if anyone else has more than one in their tank and what their experience has been with feeding and temperament!

Nothing useful do I have in my thoughts for your questions but I’ve always been impressed with the beauty of the Regal Angelfishes.

I would assume like most angels the Regal might spar against conspecifics, or even other fish that fill the same ecological niche, but never having kept that exact fish, I will defer to those who have. Multiples might not be an option unless you have a sizeable tank.

You need a big tank for multiple large angels of the same species. Like at least a 210 but bigger is definitely better. Best odds are if you get two with a decent size difference and get them at the same time/get the smaller one first.

The angels would ideally be about 2.5 - 3.5 inches, as those are big enough to survive transport but small enough to learn how to eat aquarium foods. Also, at that size they would likely both still be female and less likely to fight like mad.

So my tank is a 150, fish only with lots of swimming room. I have read that as long as you have plenty of space and no coral that min of 125 tank size you could have them.

Right on thank you! Also I read that you wanna make sure to get them from the Indian Ocean and not the Indo-Pacific, I guess it's because the ones from the Indo-Pacific don't do well in aquariums like the ones from the Indian Ocean.

I have 5 tanks, 2x240gal 2x 55 gal 1x 70 gal for filter media total about 700 gal. Heavily done in live rock and fake coral...All are interconnected by 4 inch tank to tank pass through portals totalling 24 feet long. For safety Timid or smaller fish can pick any tank they prefer although they do venture into the big boys tank, 1 xl queen, 1 LG asfur, several schooling mixed tangs and heniocus butterfly's. A happy pair of regal angels developed immediately and 3 others just swim around leisurely after a few days. Oh! Sumatra/ red sea/ Maldives regals are worth the extra bucks if you don't like netting dead Indonesian ones out in about 2 weeks. I have 4 additional sumatras from Pete's aquarium in fishkill NY arriving soon. All are born female. Longer bodied males morph later. Michael Hedges, Hawaiian knights saga

Oh I forgot in my 700 gal Atlantis themed multiplex I also have 2 pre covid Majestic angels, one grew larger and darts at the smaller one but just rushes back into his fake coral hiding place instead of choosing to navigate into the lesser aggressive tank through the portal. A 3rd majestic angel is in my Egyptian room in a separate 3 way connected 250 gal triplex with a pre covid aggressive purple tang and very aggressive wrasse (killed a copperband butterfly that wandered into his tank, by accident of course during a feeding frenzi,) some clowns and a powder blue tang.
