So I recently received a piece of dry rock that has been dry for a while. There was a small spot of dead coralline algae on the rock. After about 1 week, the coralline has started to spread and grow throughout. I didn’t have any coralline source before this so it has to be coming from the rock. How is this possible?

Happens. Lots of stuff can go dormant. It's a reason why people acid or bleach wash Rock before adding to a new tank
