Would you use a dedicated app to buy and sell things in the aquarium trade locally? Fish, Coral, equipment etc. Think facebook marketplace but built specifically for hobbyists around your area. There would be radius based filtering, so instead of scrolling through listings across the whole country you’d only see what is available near you. You’d also be able to list things for sale. There would also be a setting called “Tank Breakdown” that whenever someone near you is breaking down and selling their tank they could use our tank breakdown setting and you would get a notification and then you can check it out on the app. If you wouldn’t use something like this, why? Appreciate any feedback!

I would not use this, for the reason that there are simply better alternatives. I do not need a dedicated app to buy/trade/sell. What incentive do I have as a buyer to download another app that'll end up being bloat on my device later?

Reef2Reef has a thriving buy/sell/trade forum. I have an established account here, and I can easily view a sellers post history to gleam more information about the health of livestock based on an author's history.

This will also require a large user base to be successful. With a large user base comes large infrastructure bills (hosting, services, etc.). Assuming this were to become large, have you considered how you intend to cover the overhead? Would you take a % per sale? Would the site be riddled with ads?

Just my 0.02. I would not try to reinvent the wheel.

Really appreciate the honest feedback! All valid points. The R2R BST forum is great for established users, but the goal is more to serve the local hobbyist who wants to buy/sell within driving distance without shipping live animals. As for monetization, There would be no sales through the app, it would basically be a way buyers and sellers could connect in a finite area, and it would not be ad-heavy, the only ads you would see would be from aquariums within a certain radius. You’re right that user base is the biggest challenge, it’s something I’m actively thinking through. Definitely not trying to replace R2R, more fill the local trading gap

You mean like Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace 🙃

Yes and No, those are general marketplaces. We are building a niche marketplace for one thing and one thing only. You’re searching through couches and cars to find what you want, also craigslist and facebook would have way more ads than we would have.
