Next week I will be getting together with my welder to design and plan my stand for my upcoming 120 build. I'd like some input from folks on what you like or dislike in a steel stand and if there is anything I need to take into consideration.

I have a 60 cube with a sump now and my big gripe with it is lack of room under the tank. I built a wooden stand for it and there just isn't much space. Which is why iI' leaning towards a steel stand with this new build.

Tank will be 48x24x24 and I've got a trigger 39 sump for it.

First, I want an open front with no support beams obstructing it. Since this is a 4' tank I figured that wouldn't be a problem with weight distribution, plus I'll be using a piece of 3/4" plywood on the stand to help distribute the weight.

Second, I'll be using a shadow overflow so it will have an exterior overflow box. I'm wondering if it is better to make the stand wider so I can plumb the drains down through the stand to the sump(also will increase the amount of space I have) or have them drop down the back and into the sump area.

Third, I've been trying to figure out what will be the best method to organize my dosing pumps in the sump. Should i have an exterior cabinet to house it with my Apex and pump controllers or figure out some way to have a shelf inside?

Fourth, as far as organizing my Apex and controllers I've been thinking about building an access panel/box that would be magnetically attached to one of the sides for access or is this too iffy and I should build a cabinet or hang everything on the wall next to the tank?

I'd also like to have leveling feet on it but I'd be nervous about failure with the weight.

How have you setup your system with a steel stand? Should I consider just making it out of wood or the aluminum track stuff I've seen lately?

Thanks for the help folks!

Whatever way you go, Make sure to cover the steel with some kind of coating to prevent rust.
