I am getting ready to drill a couple holes in an aquarium. I am wanting to use a piece of wood as a guide for the bit. Does anybody have experience drilling through wood with a diamond glass drill bit? I saw a video on youtube with somebody doing this but I don't want to mess anything up with the bit.

Drill the hole in the wood first with a hole saw made for wood. This will act as a guide for the diamond bit. If you take a little plumbers putty and form a rope of putty around the hole you can fill the guide with water to assist the cut of the diamond bit.

Do not put a lot of pressure on the diamond bit but let it scratch through the glass to prevent cracking the glass.

I drill granite and quartz every week this way...unless the CNC does it first!

that would gum up the bit then start burning it up.

I used the diamond bit to cut through 1/8” plywood as a guide. Your guide doesn’t have to be particularly deep, just stable and tightened down to stop skipping.

Anything thicker than that and I’d use a hole saw bit. Your diamond bit will be a little tight in the template but that’s a good thing. No slop

wow. do not drill through wood with a diamond bit. as @Lowell Lemon explained, drill through the template with a wood hole saw, secure template to tank, switch to diamond bit.

Get one of them adjustable circle cutter bits, very useful for cutting any round holes you will ever need on wood and acrylic
