Hi,

I’ve been battling Dino’s for about 6 months to no avail. I’ve made a little progress, but still not resolved and I’m tired of these making the tank look crappy. I finally wised up and put them under a scope. Any help IDing these would be great as I can’t tell between Ostreopeis and Amphidinium.

Yeah, not sure what the problem is with the video. I will try to upload to YouTube, and then repost in a bit.

What is their behavior? Are they staining your sandbed or are they stringy? Do the disappear when the lights are off?
More red in color and stringy with bubbles on them on the sand bed. When I first got them, they got all over my rocks and sand and then I have slowly beaten them back, but still not gone and now seem to be coming back again... They got quite a bit better after my second 5 day blackout and then slowly came back after 2 weeks. I have a UV sterilizer in the tank, have been dosing NeoPhos to get phosphate up and have been doing 2.5ml of hydrogen peroxide in the morning and evening. It is a 25 gallon waterbox penninsula mini.

These are very clear images of prorocentrum. Nice microscope work.

Thanks for the feedback. I’ve tried everything at this point and can’t seem to beat them. I bought Dino X and am starting to think I am going to give it a shot… any other thoughts outside of what I have previously done to try and get rid of it?

I also have a Waterbox peninsula 25 mini, and I had Dinoflagellates. I recommend reading this:
https://www.reef2reef.com/ams/dinoflagelates-a-disruptive-treatment.873/
It helps to know the volume of water in your system. For mine, it’s 17 gallons.
I had success dosing .65 ml of NOPOX per night (after lights out), and Dr. Tim’s waste away once per week (3 capfuls).
It’s important to not let your nitrates & phosphates bottom out, and since you’re carbon dosing, they can do this easily. So I tested regularly and maintained them with Brightwell Neophos & Neonitro. There are instructions on the bottle to dial the levels exactly. I kept nitrates between 10 & 15 and my phosphates between .1 and .15. I’m sure someone will say it’s crazy to keep N & P that high, but it worked for me.

Figuring out the why: Has your primary reason(s) for keeping a saltwater aquarium changed over time?
