Grow on rock not on sand. Can be blown off with a turkey baster. Brown in color. My nitrate and phosphate are in no way low. Ph 8.1 alk 9 CA 440 mag 1450. Donos or other?

Can you upload a pic please it might help. The only certain way of telling sometimes is to stick stuff under the microscope, but most people can take educated guesses based on images and their own experiences.

Some other info that may help:
How old is the tank?
Does algae have any bubbles in it?
Is it more brown or rust brown?
Are you using ro/di for water changes and top off?

these may help make an educated guess, but unless you get it under a microscope it’s just a guess.. if your local to Los Angeles you can borrow my microscope.
