Hey Fellow reefers. I just picked this coral up and a couple days later it started dying from the bottom up. Here’s a video and picture. Can anyone educate me on this? image.jpg

Tissue necrosis. A couple days is pretty quick. That frag is very freshly cut, as it's not encrusted at all.

It's hard to say why without some tank details. How old is the tank, parameters, light, flow, etc.

I bought it from my friend. I’ve bought some coral from him in the past. It’s a acropora, not sure of the name exactly. It looked fine in his tank, I took it home and a couple days it started turning white from the bottom up. All my other sps/acros/corals are fine. Not sure what his water parameters are however I can give you mine.
Alk. 9.3
Cal. 430
Mag. 1320
Salinity 1.026/ 35ppt
he did mention going on vacation and coming back with some corals in bad shape.

It can be like cancer. Once it starts as its due to a chemistry issue, it will continue until cause is identified. Some causes to check for are:
- Alkalinity spike
- Temperature spike
- Salinity spike
- Low dissolved oxygen
- Poor water quality related with phosphate levels up to 5 ppm
- Change in water flow
- Additions of sand
- Changes in brand of salt
- Bad test kits giving faulty results
- Levels of minor elements such as Iodine, Potassium, Strontium
- Light intensity

My tanks water parameters are fine when I check last week. I only had that guy for a total of 1 week before it died. It’s more likely it was sick prior to introducing it to my tank. Is it a parasite that’s contagious, if so what preventative measurements can I do?

I don't think so, no.

I'm not a stick expert. My guess is that fresh cut frag was just stressed too much from the recent cutting and transport and differences between the 2 tanks (parameters, lighting, flow).

If its conditions, yes before they too are affected. Corals . . . . Did you by chance add or have a leather coral? If so, at times, they will emit a toxin known as Terpenes which can cause this effect. Adding carbon often will alleviate this risk
