I have personally seen this aquarium at the beginning of feb 2017. I will say I was a bit surprised at the amount of artificial decor as well artificial anemones. That said you can see the focus is on the finned specimens and that's ok. All of the fish looked great and well taken care of. I did ask some questions to the staff and they told me they take in a lot of rescues which I applaud them for. Also my wife asked about the water changes in the main huge display and they said they use the water locally. Not sure the params of the water but may not be suitable for SPS and LPS.

Yes, I own a nano fish tank, I dive, I snorkel ... and I can't stand people, who get furious about a question. Is this how you welcome people?

I don't think anyone is furious. But you asked what we thought.

I'm still not sure what it is you're disturbed about concerning the manmade reef ? Are you upset that its fake coral?

Leah,

Sorry you feel a little defensive- I understand why. But this forum really is an awesome place. I think these reactions are a communication misstep- when I first read your question, it seemed a little... judgmental. When I went back and reread your initial question after reading the discussion, I see I interpreted it incorrectly I think. It's hard to convey certain things on a forum, and different people interpret things in different ways. It's actually a really good question, and it's nice that you are discussing a topic like this. We all need to remember that we can't read voice inflection or intent 100% on here.

I'm a new hobbyist (had FOWLR years ago) so I'm back in the game. I think it's hard to answer your question, but give us some more information on why (and how) you fee about it, I think we could have a great discussion here!

This is the boat I'm in. It's really a well designed and cared for system. It's not any more crowded than some reef crests in healthy reef systems around the world.

Yes, it is disturbing to see fake corals in a fish tank by the renowned New England Aquarium, which stands for marine science and public education. A reef like that does not exist in nature neither with such coral nor fish composition.

There are organised groups who actively promote the banning of our hobby.
And the banning of public aquariums & zoos, cattle farming, commercial & recreational fishing. Horse & greyhound racing, circus animals.

We're all doing the same thing as they are, taking something out of its natural environment and putting it in a box for our own personal enjoyment. I think the difference is the level of experience/care that can be given by "experts" at the public aquarium. They have the resources/equipment to sustain this type of artificial environment successfully. We as hobbyist's have all put our little tanks in jeopardy by lack of research, lack of experience, poor husbandry, poor equipment choices, bad livestock additions, etc. Morally, none of us are right, we all have a zoo and keep animals out of their habitat. But my tank is sooo cool!!

Actually, coral reefs are very crowded with fish. I don't believe the aquarium is overcrowded. It is healthy. We may prefer the corals were real, but the fish couldn't care less. All their worried about is getting a good feed & not being feed themselves.

Why don't you post some photos of your nano tank? I'm sure it is much more realistic than the NEA.

We face the same problem in Europe. It should't prevent us from asking critical questions, don't you think?!

So long as the questions are logical & not ideologically driven.

A marine fish species was placed on the endangered list recently despite the breed being commercially bred & raised.

I fully agree! What fish was placed on the endangered list?
