Well guys, I'm gonna try my hand at culturing Amphipods!
After a week of research (and waiting for my starter culture to come in), I got my tank set up. So, heres a tutorial of how i did it.
Step one:
supplies.
(Got everything from walmart)
10 g. aquarium
(Some people use 5 g. buckets)
Small aerator and an airstone
Small heater
And 3 shower sponge things.
(Hoofas maybe?)
3 or 4 g. Of fresh saltwater (RO/DI)
(Same salinity as my main tank)
Fish food
(I use new life spectrum pellets)
And your starter culture!
(Got mine from Reefs2Go)
Step two:
Rinse EVERYTHING. Maybe it's just me, but i rinse everything i use.
Step three:
Add the water to the tank, heater, aerator, and sponge/hoofa things.
Step four:
Once the water is the right temp, add your culture!
And that, ladies and gents, is what i have done so far!
( got it all done in the past couple hours)
From the research I've done, when the population thickens, add water.
Once a month, or when the water starts to look/smell dirty, do a 50% water change. Some people use a brine shrimp net to harvest.
(Im just going to take one of the hoofas and shake it in my main tank)
Keep in mind, this is the first time I've ever done this so idk how it'll turn out. I plan on throwing a lil fish food in each day and adding/changing water when needed. Will keep updated!!!
If you have any questions, ask away, I'll do my best to answer.
HAPPY NEW YEARS!!
