This idea Is OK If you live in an area of low humidity. If you live in the southeast, Florida, Texas, or the Pacific Northwest, it might actually harm your house.

In areas of high humidity, your AC is working overtime to dry out the air in your home. If you add to this load, it makes your AC work harder. If the AC can't keep up with the moisture, the home may succumb to mildew or mold. So be careful when adding an evaporative cooler to your system.. It may do well in one area and ruin your home in another.

As Windy mentioned, your mileage may vary. Take your locale into account, as well as the the specific factors of your home.
