DIY canopy for metal halids!

So just got my halides in the other day! They are looking good, but now I will have to build a canopy! How safe is wood for a canopy or is there another material to consider using? I never realized how crazy the heat gets on halides haha :mod:

I would highly recommend putting a fan, blowing OUT of the canopy....or possibly two. Actually, I wouldn't have recommended halides in a canopy at all, for heat reasons alone. It's just asking for problems with water overheating. BUT I DO HAVE A 1/4HP CHILLER I CAN SELL YOU.

I was thinking two actually! The only reason I wanna build a canopy is to keep all of the light out of the room and keep it in the tank! the more im messing with them the more I don't really care for halides actually! Defenitly back to t5s or LEDs down the road!

Mine is wood, too. My temp runs from 79 to 81 throughout the day. I run two 250W bulbs, approximately 10" off the water. It is enclosed with the exception of four 4" holes, two of them with fans. I lose about 8 gallons every 5 or 6 days.

Same evap as most get. I have to replace roughly 4-5 gallons every 3-4 days.

I raised my lights 2 more inches! seems to help with the heat, im only get 2 -4 degrees higher than, so its running 78-80 during the day! Thinking i might not have to build a canopy after all!
