DIY Cheap oscillating wave maker swivel

I'm starting on a DIY version of the Tunze Orca.
There are some 3d printed versions you can buy but I believe I can make it cheaper. Based on an Arduino nano.

So I ordered parts:
Nema 17 steppermotor (bipolar)
A4988 motordriver
12x14mm carbon rods
and ball bearings.

I have the other parts at home.

I havent received there parts but im thinking about a solution to make a salt creep safe way for the rod to enter the housing. I'm thinking to use a tight 3d printed bus ( that has enough marge to move freely) and use a silicone based grease to keep salt and moisture out and make sure that all resistance and load goes through the bearings to limit wear and resistance. a wave maker is pushing against the rod So I need the bearings.
Any other suggestions that are easy and cheap?

there will be 2 potentiometers 1 for speed and 1 for angle I'm thinking about 20 to 180 degrees?

Any ideas are welcome. I do have to add that I have a fulltime job and won't be able to finish this project fast. But it shouldn't be to difficult.

while that is a good idea to mount it. Every part that can be 3d printed has to be 3d printed:) so using an of the shelf mount will make it more difficult for others to replicate and also, make everything way more expensive
 
This is true. But the electronics part of it is done. Motorized pan and tilt are available with controls.

You just need to adapt a way to mount the powerhead.

I am interested in your approach as I have had similar ideas. I am currently still running old school sea swirls.

I don't need tilt so I'm paying for stuff I don't need.
A nema 17 and a driver and Arduino and potentiometers and some small stuff is 20dollars.
if im using your idea I still need an Arduino ,drivers that hopefully will work and custom code. So im paying more and hopefully it works. that's why I'm starting from scratch. I don't like using parts that aren't made for the purpose. it always end up being a compromise.
