DIY/Cheap overflow?

Talking with the wife about adding a sump to the 36 bowfront....already a 10gal tank under it so its not a huge process already. Her comment was "and how do you plant to get the water down there genius". I explained the idea behind a syphon overflow and the challenges that comes with it and overflowing the tank below in a power outage situation, especially with only a 10 gal tank below. It was then I thought....there are well documented retrofits of an Aquaclear110 to make a fuge out of it...why couldn't I modify a HOB filter to make that my "out" for the tank? Use a smaller size return pump to closely match the return flow.
