Overflow placement on New tank

Hey all, I’m staring my next build and I have a conundrum with the placement on my overflow. I have a 60”x24”x28” tank that has a glass center brace that is 18” wide.

My overflow is a Modular Marine 1800 gph ghost overflow that is 18” wide.


Clearly for easy and quick access the overflow box should be mounted to one side of the glass center brace. Probably the left side in this case as that’s the side where the drains in my sump are. Then a single return nozzle on the opposite side. I am worried about noise caused by water movement with it off center. My current tank has a peninsula overflow setup and any wave or large ripple causes all kinds of noise due to the irregular draining.

Which is one reason why first instinct is to center the overflow in the tank. Best overall surface skimming performance and I can have a return nozzle on each side of it, Nice and balanced. The problem is obviously the center glass brace obstructs access. The only reason I’m still considering this is because the overflow weir slides right out of the bulk heads for cleaning. Which means that I can just shut the pumps down, close the valves, and remove the weir for maintenance. I won’t have quick access to it, but I’m not completely without access either.


What’s the right move here? Are there things I’m missing or overlooking?

I don't think being off-center would affect the 'overflow' in the way you are thinking. If a bow wave comes, it comes whether the overflow is centered or off-center.
