DIY cooling solution for Biocube 32g

What's up guys, anyone with a biocube and a lid knows reefing can make temps go way up, to help with this I installed a fan to my hinge on my lid. I used a wire holder and glued it to the lid so the lid functions without the wire falling into the water. The fan has its own controller and has good RPM, it's hooked up to an inkbird cooling/heating controller. Simple cooling solution that cost me little and still has decent water retention.

I used a 75mm drill bit off Amazon for fan hole, 80mm fan with controller off Amazon, inkbird controller off Amazon.

What’s better, fan pulling in cool air from the cooler room (blowing on the water), or fan pushing hot air out?

Are you still able to open the door for feeding?

To cool, you will want the fan blowing directly onto the water, it blew my mind to learn a simple fan blowing on water can cool the tank below 5 degrees ambient temp.

Yes, lid and flip lid both functional.

Do you have a link for What fan you used? And how much clearance is between the fan and the water?

A few inches.

I changed the metal for a plastic mesh cover and also changed the screws to Nylon after about 3 months the metal started to corrode. I have also gone through a fan already, the new one is going strong for about 6 months now, so I could have had a defective one.

I'm in the process of installing this fan in my hood. could you send me pictures of the way you WIRED under your Hood. I'm 74 and not good at doing things like that. your help is greatly appreciated. 6\19/2025 Larry

hope you dont get this twice. could you send me pictures of the way you run your wires under yourI'm in the process of installing the same setup in mt nano. your help in this is greatly appreciated. i'm 74 and not real good at these things. [email protected]

Hi Larry,

I just use something like THIS and leave a small little loop so the wire can travel freely, 2 or 3 is all you'll need.

I have an Oceanic BIO Cube, that was a rescue. The original light cover is missing. I had a glass top made for it. During the Winter the back section is covered, as it warms, I remove the cover, warmer, I put a fan blowing up, even warmer, blows down on the water. BTW, some fans on Amazon have an IP Rating.
