I heard that when you're using fresh food, to use something like Hikari, as it's safer than buying fish at the market to DIY your own fish food. I guess they irradiate it or do something to get rid of bugs and whatever. since I would like to save some money on fish food, make it myself might be preferable. Opinions?

Lots of people make their own. It's really a cost/ease question. Prepackaged foods are easy and relatively affordable. Home made is orobabpr better for your fish, but the cost can be a bit higher due to the quality of the ingredients. Depending on how much you make and how long it will last may make home made cheaper in the long run

Seafood sold for human consumption is subject to vastly more quality control, regulation, and inspection than anything sold for fishfood. Also, irradiation of meat is uncommon and I believe the FDA requires the food to be labeled as such (even though irradiation presents absolutely no risk to the consumer, people are paranoid).

I cant imagine any safety based reason to prefer fishfoods over seafood sold for human consumption.

You can also freeze the food to kill off most parasites. A lot of the bacteria will survive a home freezer (which is a positive not a negative).
