I was thinking of buying a cheap HOB filter and a cheap white spectrum light and placing it on the back of my 20 gal and adding macro algae to it (removing all the filtration from the filter) thoughts? and do you guys have a better idea for a DIY refugium for macroalgae

Should work well. I’ve done something similar with these breeder boxes. I would suggest a rooting algae rather than a free floating as it will eventually make it way into the main tank or into the dump
