I'm practicing building my own filtration on my smaller tank before moving to the big one. On my 37g what size PVC pipe should I use for my overflow to the sump? Will 3/4" be enough because 1" will be very bulky?

I run a Supreme Mag-Drive 7 on my tank. If you run any circ pumps, a 500 gph pump would be sufficient. I run a bigger pump because i like to give my acros a lot of flow.

I watched one by a guy that has a bunch of DIY vids but he didn't give me an idea on correct size so I posted here. You guys have been great. I'm picking up the materials next week to build a plywood aquarium. So this is a test run in plumbing techniques for that, even though I'm plumbing that tank.

with 500 gph return you will need at least 1 1/4 pipe for your overflow. have 400 gph return and 1 inch pipe on my overflow and it is barely enough.

I'm going to keep it lower than that, don't need that much flow. This is an awesome learning experience. Ive done aquariums for 15 yrs and never dived into sump filtration so this is adding a new thrill to the hobby.

If I use the sump as my refugium, would 3/4" pipe and about 285gph of flow be too much or little.
