i had a custom size tank and stand made and am not sure whether I should just place the tank right to the wood top of the stand or put a leveling mat or styro between it

Leveling mat here. I found styrofoam to settle uneven.

You think it's completely necessary to use a mat? The tank has a frame as well as the stand has a decorative trim

What is a leveling mat. Does it actually level out your tank if your stand is not level?

I recommend one if for nothing else than peace of mind;)

I don't. Its a 36w36h24length. with 3/4 in glass and no mat. Mat is supposed to distribute the weight, not really level it. It's a heavy tank
