My tank has been up for about 3 years. It has had a sandbed in the sump the whole time. It is a bit of a pain, since every time I move anything down there the sand gets kicked up into the main tank. Also it is crowded in my sump so it is hard to clean. I'm thinking of cleaning out the sand and going bare bottom. What do you do?

I do not have sand in my sump. In my refugium I have a couple of 16oz deli cups with some 'mucky' sand and I grow manatee grass. But the rest of the fuge is bare bottom.

I used to have a huge system (a 10'x2'x18" sump/refugium/DSB) and kept a DSB that was 24x 24 and 8" deep. I never had any issues with in over the 5 years I ran it.
