Both. The chemical is approved by the fda to kill mollusks in fresh water , for example.

My understanding is it will kill off less complex micro algea first and will kill macro algae slower. Algaecides work by disrupting a vital process in the cells of algae such as stopping photosynthesis or bursting the cell walls. But it may also effect the symbiotic algae in coral as well as hurt snails.

It's a pretty nasty product and I wouldn't advise using it at all. It's sometimes tempting to try to take an easy way out and dump a chemical in to fix a problem. However its much better to figure out why you have algae in the first place and fix the root cause. You can manually remove the bulk of the algae and then add clean up crew to keep it in check.

Vibrant can work as a last resort, if the only other option is tearing the tank down. Unless you're at that stage, you're better off doing something else. Particularly as the algae will likely come back, unless you fix the problem that allowed it to pop up in the first place.

If I understand @taricha Vibrant studies, it will be adsorbed to all the favorable surfaces until they are saturated and any added afterwards, will increase the concentration in solution. Cheato will adsorb Vibrant, stop it growing and possibly kill it. Having Chaeto around is reducing the amount of Vibrant that might attach to nuisance algae.

I had a nice MAR using cheato. I started using Vibrant after taking a two week vacation and coming home to GHA everywhere. Dumb move in hindsight. I used it for about two months at the "dirty tank level". During this time it took out all the cheato I had. I still had to go in my tank and remove as much GHA as I could during water changes. I stopped using Vibrant a month ago. Tried cheato in my MAR this week and it’s dying off already. I believe from the use of Vibrant. The tank looks great though. Lol

I think there is almost always a better solution to algae issues than dosing Vibrant. Can you share a bit about the algae problem you're trying to solve?

I understand what you are saying, and I am trying to get to the root of the problem, but I am dealing with Chrysophyytes, which is a type of algae not very well known for its causes or how to treat it. It is not affected by nutrients in my case, and no type of clean-up crew enjoys eating it (It's like a snotty-slimy gross mess). I don't have many corals right now, and I have been dealing with this for over a year now and I am really tired of it. I plan to get rid of it through a regular water change schedule, manual removal, and dosing vibrant, because from what people are saying that is what I should do.

Oh yeah, I would take that out of the tank and stop using it, the vibrant will kill the cheato. Just put it in a bucket with some water from a water change and leave it like that until you stop the vibrant.

Ah, fair enough, sounds like you /are/ at the "it's this or starting over" stage. The reason we're telling you about what Vibrant does is because a lot of people don't know, and we don't really have any way to know what you're aware of without being told. Better to tell someone a thing they already know than to not give information they need, yanno?

I don't think the Vibrant would be less effective for the presence of the chaeto, but you should probably remove any algaes, snails, and other creatures you want to not kill regardless. That would have the side benefit of also preserving the algae and beneficial bacteria on all the surfaces involved.
