Sumps are always desired! I'm setting up a 20g sump/fuge on my 40 breeder DT :)
Anything living that is found on Live Rock we refer to it as a Hitch Hiker. Sometimes known as a pest, other times as a score :)

DChen, thanks for asking the question! I've been hesitant to ask the same question! For me, it's a question of whether it's just desirable or a true necessity. Ideally, I'd like to put a sump on my first build but I'm approaching my first attempt from a KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) method and just can't decide if a sump is something I need or something I want.

Well I've been running my 26g for 3yrs without a sump. Been a reefer for 5yrs. Do I know the actual benefits of having a sump? No. But I can only imagine!
I am very excited for the added water volume, a place to put equipment besides hanging off my DT, the many options it gives for better filtration i.e. refugium and I'll no longer have to disturb nor risk shocking my livestock with water changes.
For $60 I built my own :)

Btw that looks like a cool 60$ build you have there. Maybe I should look into it, I wouldn't mind having one if its all benefits to your tank anyways. Whatever makes my life easier in the long run.

Definitely, if it help me in the long run. The less trouble the better for a couple more buck put into the tank.

NEED ONE - No

Is it better to have one - Definitely
  • Adds water volume
  • Conceals all that unsigtly equimpent
  • Better skimming
  • a place to grow pods
You can def be successful without one though.
