Apologies if this is a silly question but I'm not finding exactly the info I'm after.
My understanding is that a refugium established with macroalgae and whatever else acts as a place for copepods to reproduce safely and sustainably. But what is stopping phytoplankton from also reproducing in there? If one has a "full" refugium (strong light on reverse timer, substrate, live rock, thriving macros) is phyto supplementation still necessary or does it hit a point where they become self sustaining like the copepods?
Edit to add: Assume no mechanical filtration or skimming either, just biological and refugium.
