I have 2 aquariums. The first one is 55 gallons, has been running about 10 years. Everything low end home made. The second one is 120 gallon, has been running about 18 months. I don't know if I would go as far as saying everything is high end but it is a lot better than the 55.

The 55 has a HOB. I am always worried it is going to lose siphon and it is loud. I am thinking about drilling the tank and installing a Shadow Overflow. It has 3 - 1 1/2" drains for a Bean Animal. One is a full siphon, one just has a trickle and the last is a safety. According to the BRS/WWC hybrid method it needs less than 200GPH. My 120 has a 3300GPH return. I would like to plumb it to the sump on the 120. Both tanks are in my living room with the TV in between. I don't want to be looking at pipes so.

How does this sound. I will have the 3 -1 1/2" drains come down into a 2" pipe. Have the 2" go inside the wall and run down to the 120 sump and while I have the wall open I can run the return.

A lot of the 55 gallon tanks are tempered glass so you may want to do the polarized sunglasses/computer screen test to see if it is drillable.

I thought the bottoms were tempered, not the sides. I will have to look up now to do the test.

Here is a chart for Marineland tanks
