I took my 65g tank (approximately 55 to 60g water volume) and put it in a 75g tank in my new home. I’m not sure if the water volume in new tank, but it’s 10 to 20g more in volume (sump is larger too) so I expected my dosages to increase. But it’s been significantly more than I expected and I still haven’t found the right amount.

I was dosing around 21 or 22 ml of Red Sea liquid alkalinity a day in the old tank. I can get the tank up to around 8 and then a day later I’m back around 7.1 or 7.2. I keep raising the dosage (currently at 33 ml a day spread over 10 doses) and still having issues. I did recalibrate my pump, so the ml might not be completely comparable if the calibration was off before.

It seems that some is precipitating out. I am seeing ph spikes when I dose, but also see what’s shown in the video. I’m not sure why there doesn’t seem to be enough flow in the return chamber. I have a mighty jet XL set at 50% which should be around 1300gph. The calcium is around 415 so not too high. Any ideas?

Why do you assume it is precipitating?

Is sand hardening?

Pumps seizing up?

Demand of 2 dKH per day is not unusual.
Well, maybe precipitating isn’t the right word, but unless I stir up the return chamber, it sits in there. I don’t get why the dosage is so much higher than it was before. I had expected 20-25% more but I’m at about 50% more right now and still not stable

Well, if it’s not mixing in, that’s a serious issue. Can you spread out the dosing more?

I definitely can do more than 10 doses. Does that seem excessive? Right now I dose 3.5 ml (just upped it again tonight) every 2 hrs from 5 am until 11 pm. I could do every hour instead? Or do you have a dosing pattern you’d recommend? I will say, that video was from a larger adjustment dose than my normal smaller doses, but this was what I found before I dosed anything manually, and I still had some from the last 24 hrs that didn’t mix in:

Would it be weird to put a small powerhead in the return area to make sure it mixes in well? Or that may mess up my ATO sensor
