Drilling tank in cold weather?

Does it matter much what the outside temps are and the temp of the water coming out of the garden hose? It’s not too bad here during the day, about 40-50s f. But I know hot drill and cold glass could possibly crack. Like dropping an ice cold drinking glass in a sink with hot water in it.

Hot drill and cold glass would only crack if you go from hot to cold instantly. If you start out with it cold and it gradually gets hot from the drill you should be ok. However in those temperatures with cold water running on it from your garden hose, I don't see that drill bit getting to hot :) another good option would be if your basement is unfinished or semi finished and you have a floor drain do it over that.

My basement is under renovations at the moment, no carpet yet but also no floor drain. I just got a new 40 gallon breeder with an Eshopps Eclipse S internal overflow. I was just hoping I wouldn't have to wait until the temps get above 60 to drill. Finally I can use the Somatic sump I won here, only 4 months later :rolleyes:

I will say this, you'll love the eclipse s on your 40 breeder. I know I love mine :) just a tip, put the template on the inside all the way up against the rim, and drill from the inside out. If you put the template on the outside the rim causes it to be to low and your water level in the tank will be to low. So put it on the inside as high up as it will go so it sits right up against your rim :)

My first holes were 11 years ago around Feb/Mar in New Jersey. Can't remember temperatures, but this was outside on my side porch. I can only guess....40ish. You can see the reflection in the glass of trees, with no leaves. Water running over the bit during drilling.....no problems.

I did mine inside [and with a full tank] using a soaked paper towel wad on the inside of the bit
