Drying Out Live Rock

Hi all,

I decided that I want to take a few pieces of live rock out of my 40g tank since it's basically crashed and I only have 3 shrimp and turbo snails in there, along with whatever hitchhikers came along. However, I am planning on upgrading to a 125g within the next month or so, and I wanted to begin the new tank with all dry rock, in order to prevent hitchhikers since I personally do not prefer them.

With this in mind, the winter months have came around in northern ohio, and a day of putting them on a tarp on the back porch won't necessarily work out, unless you like icy rock. Are there any other ways that would work to dry it out, but not boil it since I don't want to come close to hazardous vapors around. If worst comes to worst, I could find a nice 50 degrees F day to do the honors, but if there's an easier way, please do let me know.

Big trash bin and soak it over night in bleach/water. Then let air dry for a week.

I have done it so many times. I upgraded three times in the last 3 years and I did this everytime I do a tank upgrade
Here is how I did and never have any problems.

1. fill the trash bin with water, add bleach and stir the water well.
2. Next put the rocks in and let them soak for overnight (making sure you wear the gloves)
3. next morning, empty out the water (wear gloves), rinse the rocks with new water (2-3 times)
4. Let the rock dry for a day or two
5. Fill up the trash bin again with new water, add baking soda and stir the water well.
6. Put the rocks in and let the rocks soak for overnight
7. Next day, rinse the rocks
8. Let the rocks dry for a couple of days (longer is better)
