Dumb Ranco Question

With the Ranco controller do you just stick the probe in the water? Or do you put it in a bag? Just that it doesn't look all that well insulated, I know a lot of people use it so I thought I would ask.

Encase the probe in heat shrink tubing.

You can also just apply two part epoxy over the cable and probe interface.

I already ordered the 3/8 hose. But can add the epoxy at the end of the hose. I was wondering about that in my mind.

I epoxied mine in a titanium well then used shrink tubing. If I was doing it again I would use titanium tubing instead of rod.

I have seen where folks will add an extra layer of water proofing, like a bag, but it doesn't need it. They sell replacement probes, these are good temperature controllers.

I added shrink tubing and tried to melt the end waterproof but it didn't work. So mine sits directly in the water and has for the past year and a half with no issues

You can just stick the probe in the water; It should not need additional protection according to my experience through a few years of using Ranco controllers in my saltwater aquariums.

LOL I don't know how I ended up with 2 posts. The funny thing is the answers are different. I ended up going with the 3/8 clear shrink tubing they recommend on the other post.

If you went heat shrink route, you can heat up the end of the length of tube you're using and crimp it with a pair of needle nose pliers to create the bottom seal. Then just place on the end and heat it from the sealed end up.

I know it been a few months since the last post. But found Ti tubing. .3 ex dia, and .26 int dia. Amazon. Just have to cap the ends with epoxy.
