I set up a new 60 gallon tank that came with a 1" drain... I decided to make a durso stand pipe to quiet it down and also because my last tank came with one so I was used to it. I made the pipe using 1.25 pcv in the overflow and 1 pvc going to the sump because again that's what I was used to seeing. The problem is that after drilling the small hole in the top of the durso I'm getting way to much agitation in the sump and My filter sock is over flowing with foam. If I take the sock off the flow is way to heavy coming down. So what I did was to close the valve on the drain a little bit restricting the flow. My question is if there's anything wrong with doing that ? It doesn't seem to be affecting the water level in my sump at all and but I'm not sure if it will over time

If you are running one drain you should not restrict the flow, you could overflow the tank. Find a 6" PVC to cut to length and use it as a bubble trap or just restrict the turbulence. The foam maybe be a result of just setting up the tank and there is something in the water, run some carbon.

You can put a tiny airline valve in the top of your durso and put the end (air intake) just below the rim of the display in the overflow box, so in the event the tank starts to overfill it will go full siphon and drain the tank quickly.

Is the return controllable? You could lower its gph and reduce the issues that way, or get a smaller pump, or put a valve on the return line. Never a valve on the drain (unless you have a second back up drain).
