As you may be aware, 11 new states have adopted Internet Sales Tax policies as of October 1, bringing the total to 34 states that now require the collection of sales tax. As the impact of this tax law becomes more apparent, PayPal and eBay are making changes that will make Internet Sales Tax collection less complex for buyers and for you.

Starting in November 2019, the way taxable transactions are processed and how taxes are collected for remittance will change, as follows:

  • In states where eBay is required to collect Internet Sales Tax from buyers, order totals sent for processing will reflect the gross order amount inclusive of tax.

  • Once settled, the tax amount will be automatically deducted for remittance to the applicable taxing authority.

  • A record of the sales tax portion of the order will be available on the details page and through our Download order report.

Please note the applicable tax will continue to be paid by the buyer and you do not need to take any action.

We understand that the holiday selling season is nearly upon us and we are working to make this transition as smooth as possible.

It's been that way for awhile now.
I just checked, Michigan has not started YET. Probably why I am just now noticing this.
Buying used goods that have already been taxed is Cow Patty. what next Garage sales? R2R Markets ;Shifty

Everytime a product is bought or sold, new or used the government wants it's money. BTW garage sales have been included in this for a very long time, just no way for them to really enforce if you pay your taxes on from proceeds.

It started in January 2019 with a few states if I remember correctly. I'm in Illinois and we're scheduled to be taxed come January 2020. I'm sure all states will eventually be required.

Yep, I'm a flipper/reseller and ebay is starting to really slow down as a platform for me.

I get at least one message a week on someone telling me they got overcharged and that I should cover their sales tax, super annoying!

Also all listings now are good until sold, took some buying incentive away on BIN/OBO items.

It's been slowwww

I guess that depends on your state. Not so in Florida.

I used to be big into eBay but it got to be too much of a pain. Things like this make it worse. They are not a taxing authority. They are supposed to be a platform only. The agreed to this so they could hold money for interest, as well as make money. Here in Florida we get a discount if we pay on time. That means we get to keep a portion of sales tax collected. Imagine the money rolling into eBay from this.

@flsalty you still have to pay federal taxes in florida. Buyers pay sells tax, sellers pay income tax.
There is no federal sales tax. We are talking about sales taxes here. Florida has exemptions for garage sale type situations.

Maybe I wasn't clear. Retailers (sellers) collect the sales tax from buyers. Then the sellers send it to the state. However, the seller gets to keep a percentage as a sort of accounting fee.
