Guys,

I have a brainstorming question with respect to the basic operation of Vortechs: when it comes to the surge functionality does the propeller reverse direction or does it spin in only one direction?

Really any mode that produces some kind of surge. I am new to the product and am brainstorming the placement of the pump.
I don’t think they run in reverse, it’s just the synchronisation between the pumps, and it’s very flexible. The vortech website has good info. I’ve run two on the sides, two on the back, and one of each. I found the latter worked best for me but it will really depend on your tank, scape and inhabitants.
 
Sorry which mode do you mean on the vortech? Reef crest? I don’t believe they run in reverse, more the sync between two or more pumps to create the surge.
A Pump body I believe its called a volute is designed to be run in one direction only the inlet is larger than the outlet which with the RPM and impeller create the velocity and gpm
 
The impeller on the pump spins only in one direction, but to create a surge or various flow patterns the rpm increases or decreases. To surge the pump has a sharp increase in rpm and then a quick decrease in rpm.
 
I am asking about the MP series (MP10 to be specific).
Ok that's different. I did not know they made them. Because of the performance of my return pump these are now my go to what most call anyway what I call a powerhead. They are variable DC obviously and are run on magnetic flow of a coil with a stator inside so no , not as is you might be able to if you reverse the current flow since it is polarity sensitive , but it would be a not recommended thing to do.
 
The vortech MPs do not rotate in 2 directions, they only operate in one. That derived from concern that spinning it the opposite direction would lend itself to magnetic decoupling. The early VT models used a right hand threaded rod with a nut to hold the propeller on. The concern then was spinning the nut off.

The motors used on the vortech are 3 phase and simply reversing the input voltage would have no effect of motor rotation. On the contrary, you run the risk of damaging the circuity. In the vortech, they use field oreinted control to precisely control the motor and use back emf to detect any issues with rotation (earlier version the used hall effect sensors).

Yes if you read my post it was addressed . Sounds like you are quoting an AI article which is not acceptable.🥸 Crystler tried left hand thread nuts on obviously wheels that turned clockwise no nuts spun off to my knowledge
