Emperor Angel - Sick or Color Changing Phase?

What do you guys think? He’s eating normally but less active than before. All other fish are fine and not witnessing any aggressions.

really hard to tell without a white light picture. I see a bit of blotchiness but could be a factor of the light.

I understand— took quick pics this am before heading to work. The lighting is blu’ish, ramping up. Yes, there are patches across the body. I‘ve not witnessed the phase change before so don’t know what to expect.

I hope so — been monitoring closely; hope it’s not ich/velvet!

He’s swimming & eating normally — just a little sluggish than before hence the concern.

Know the routine - thanks for the reminder. Curious: what do you look for on these angels to know if it’s a bacteria infection vs a color change?

Still hard to tell with the blue lighting. IMO the skin does look a bit powdery but that could be the lighting

That’s the whitest I could make it with these Orphek lights. Looking at the patterns, it’s unlikely color changing but I believe he’s sick.

Likely Neobenedenia fluke or ich - or stress (but unlikely)

Just too blue to see anything.

The change in behavior indicates there is probably something going on other than a color change.

Emperors are prone to Neobenedenia and they also show every little issue on their skin by blanching.

Lots of fish in that tank though, if you had Neo for any length of time you would be seeing other fish with cloudy eyes and skin.

I’ve treated the whole tank with PraziPro 6(?) weeks ago and everyone is doing great, no more cloudy eyes and fins are clean — thanks again for your help! However, just the Emperor Angel developed something last week and I was thinking it’s due to color change.

Will keep an eye on it.

I’ve treated the whole tank with PraziPro 6(?) weeks ago and everyone is doing great, no more cloudy eyes and fins are clean — thanks again for your help! However, just the Emperor Angel developed something last week and I was thinking it’s due to color change.

Will keep an eye on it.

Just one prazi treatment? That won't stop flukes from returning. The dosing is tricky, but you need to dose it once, then again at a time where any new flukes have hatched from eggs, but soon enough so that they haven't had a chance to lay new eggs of their own (prazi does not kill fluke eggs). I use an 8 day time to the second dose, but some people do 6 days. In many cases, 3 or more treatments are required (up to 5!)

I'm working on a project this week to review the literature and public aquariums on the timing for prazi treatments and Neobenedenia. I'm not ready to report yet, but it isn't good news. We've long known that 2 treatments sometimes works for gill flukes, but rarely does for Neo. Turns out to control Neo, some people dose it every 3 days for 2 weeks!
