Emptying Frequency: Skimmer Collection Cup

I will typically empty my skimmer cup daily. It amounts to 1 liter of skim per day roughly.

My gut tells me it’s a little much, but the skim always stinks so it might be ok

I thought this would be an interesting poll.

I was thinking this when I read that you were whiffing the skimmer cup.

So, what’s a good way to dial in the skimmer? Should the bubbles starts lower on the neck and with time they’ll creep up?

DRains into a 1 gallon vessel.
Empty every 2 to 4 weeks, never full..

Yes.
These things don’t need to overflow constantly. Once a week will coat the cup inside with gunk that can be removed when you clean it. Wet skimming messes with the top off water and tank salinity .

Adjust so the foam is almost breaking over the top. Have to wait an hour between adjustments.

Got it! So let the bubbles slowly creep up and adjust. I guess that is what was meant by breaking your skimmer in?

I'm with Kris on the salinty thing. I do run a skimmer on a larger heavily stocked tank but i skim dry. I don't want the hassle of having to chase salinty. Skimming like this I really don't even have to test the salinity of the DT. The only time this one is full is when I forget to shut it down before turning the return off and it overflows and all the nastiness flows back into the tank. Funny thing is my rock Flowers and corals come to life amd look better than any other time when it happens. Kinda makes me question if I should even be running it :thinking-face:

These are my rock Flowers after an overflow incident triggered a spawning event. I suppose it could be coincidence but I don't think so. All of my zoas puffed up amd looked better than ever also.

Breaking the skimmer in refers to removing the cup and letting the active bubbles roll over, out back into the water for a few days.
This 'washes' any manufacturing treatments off and preps the skimmer surface for your tank.
