Emptying Frequency: Skimmer Collection Cup

How long is it taking folks to fill their skimmer collection cups?

It looks a tad low, but considering you have been blowing the devil out of it let it ride for 5 days and see if it doesn’t surprise you and start working?

Running it low can’t hurt , ime. If it doesn’t collect after 5 bump it up an inch and wait again

No more of these devlish ways! I’m a believer now 😇

Thanks 😈😈😈

Sometimes they won't pull much just because there's nothing to pull out.
Definitely looking forward to chasing the salinity less. This simple advice is going to be a game changer I think!

I wouldn’t be surprised if mine looks like boiling water since my Nitrates are about 10ppm and phosphates 0.06 - 1ppm.

I’ll start feeding a little more maybe 🤔

DC Pump is running at 100 percent.
Hey my bro. Same skimmer (rsk-600). Clean….eh, every 3-4 weeks-ish, maybe 30% full, due delayed onset OCD.

Thoughts:
- I wouldn’t run at 100% - follow the RS recommendation for the size (don’t think any are 100%).
- they seem to run best with water level at bottom of the red tape recommended water level (or lower)
- took a while to break in (mostly due to new tank and being downstream from a Reefmat).
- my internal water level is about 1/2” below where the vertical neck starts (so it skims dry)

I think these babies work great!

I am running an rsk 300 also, @Bartanto s advice is pretty spot on. Except the 100% part. Mine isnt adjustable and runs full out all the time, just like he said though about 1/2 inch below the neck line.

Buy one of those pads of carbon.
Cut out a rectangle and put it in the collection cup. It will prevent the smells.

I'm with Kris on the salinty thing. I do run a skimmer on a larger heavily stocked tank but i skim dry. I don't want the hassle of having to chase salinty. Skimming like this I really don't even have to test the salinity of the DT. The only time this one is full is when I forget to shut it down before turning the return off and it overflows and all the nastiness flows back into the tank. Funny thing is my rock Flowers and corals come to life amd look better than any other time when it happens. Kinda makes me question if I should even be running it :thinking-face:

These are my rock Flowers after an overflow incident triggered a spawning event. I suppose it could be coincidence but I don't think so. All of my zoas puffed up amd looked better than ever also.

I think it’s because it goes back in as undissolved organic food. It’s protein and nutrients that they can deliciously grab. I believe you basically made real “marine snow”

The high nutrients the corals want aren’t the nitrates and phosphates but all the organic byproducts of the tank.

Cool! I’ll take @Bartanto and your advice and raise the skimmer just a hair. Right now the water level is at bottom of the tape (7inches)

Also turned down the motor to 70%.

Let’s make some skim boys!

Lol. Where the bubbles rise to in the neck, not the skimmer in the sump. Waterline at the bottom of the red tape is perfect, dont mess with it.

Roger that.

Can we call the neck just above the R in the picutre below?

Kinda hard to see, almost time to clean it again, but the top of the neck is the edge it goes over to spill into the collection cup all the way at the top.

Ohhh! 1/2 inch from the top of the neck into the spill cup.

Not 1/2 inch from the bottom of the neck!

So my skimmer has been running for about 2-3 days straight and I’ve made some of the best skim!

Not watery -it’s dry. No more chasing salinity. Best of all no emptying the cup everyday!!!

Thank you all!!!!
