Lets put the Serious Reefs' 90/10 Method to the test

Awesome build. I'm using the 90/10 as a guide but didn't get the TBS sand and using ocean direct instead. Didn't see the 90/10 before starting the tank.

Tank is going on 16 days and have been cycled for more than half that time. Haven't turned on the light as I'm waiting for my first fish to finish QT. Being I don't have a biodiversity, I will be taking it slow with the lighting and using copepods and Cuc to keep the tank in check.
I have to say, starting at a very low wattage for only a few hours a day and slowly ramp up the lights to where you’ll have them really helps to keep the ugliest to a minimum. Seems like such a simple concept but most of us usually just set the lights and deal with what comes after.

Week 8 First Corals:

Time for a super exciting update! The first corals have been added! I’m feeding a bit heavier since my last testing to try to get some phosphate into the tank for the corals. I’ll also have to manually adjust the ALK for now up to 8dkh.

For my first corals I wanted to go with something I’ve never had before. I was thinking either a leather, singularia, gorgonian or something along those lines.

I came home with a nice sized piece of a Green and purple Devils Hand Leather along with a Purple Frilly Gorgonian. Once I got them home and acclimating I noticed a bonus on the base rock of the Leather, a small piece of what I think is a cabbage leather. How neat!

Here are some pictures alright after I added them.

The following day everything was starting to open up. I was surprised how much larger the cabbage leather was, it looked quite open when I put it into the tank, but it doubled in size overnight.

How are you handling QT for coral and invert? I take it you're skipping it?

Yes, I'm taking Ryan's approach of having utilitarian fish and inverts that will address most pests such as flatworms and aiptasia. QT of the fish is good enough to prevent most other diseases and fish parasites. I understand ich and certain other parasites can be introduced via inverts and corals, but I seriously question the actual probability of that causing an issue inside the tank.

Good news, left on 5/29 for a vacation to Arizona and got back early this morning (5/6) and the tank did just fine while I was away. It does appear that algae is a bit more noticeable, but overall I'm going to attribute that to the house sitter having a heavier hand with feeding. I have to test water parameters yet, but I'm guessing nitrate and phosphates are a bit higher than they were.

@Kodski How is the tank doing? Would love to see an update!
My goodness. I can’t believe it’s been almost 3 months since I updated! The Summer time-warp really hit hard. Between vacations, working on the house and garden, I’ve completely lost track of time. The tank is doing great! It’s been and will remain the easiest tank I’ve ever kept. A couple of major things happened but nothing directly negative to this tank. I’ve added a few corals and inhabitants recently. I’ll try to do a major update this week. I haven’t even taken a picture of the tank since the last one I posted. My gosh I’m slacking. Stay tuned!

Would love an update if there's anything worth posting @Kodski

Awaiting my delivery of TBS sand Wednesday, your thread has been a great source of information as I set this new tank up

I intend to update tomorrow!

Apologies for the lack of an update. Right after my last post saying I'd update, a tornado went through just to the north of me and caused a huge mess. I work in local government and work just got crazy after that with disaster relief and other daily duties. Meanwhile I had part of my house completely torn apart for a remodel that I needed done before an assessment. Both events are winding down now and the tank will get more attention.

Its time for a water change day and I need to do some testing. With the neglect, some corals don't look too happy. I've been trying to keep up with water changes and for the most part have but I have failed to keep up with parameter testing.
