Again … I have not seen anything in 20+
years referring to turnover .
but I do remember a lfs preaching 30x turnover for filtration

I still see crazy numbers preached. It is just not realistic or necessary though. Realistically 5x is fine. 10x is about the max most people are going to hope to realistically get.

You could also just design a tank from scratch to be energy minimal. A good option might be a temperate non-photo tank, like with NW Pacific species. No light, no skimmer, and no chiller if you choose the right animals and if your house temps are appropriate.
