English, grammar, usage....arghhhhh!

My wife of 33 years is the smartest person I know, but her spelling is awful and her grammar is worse. I'm still kind of fond of her though. If I can understand what she's trying to communicate, I don't even bother to correct her. I just keep on keepin on. ( Ja see what I done with the keepin? Cuz its miss spelled! lol BTW IMO LMNOP!)

This discussion seems to be devoid of the understanding that English isn't regulated like other languages (ex. French.)

This is an international forum, and we should allow for regional dialects.

By the way, I want to point out that pronunciation isn't a grammatical issue :). An example of a grammatical issue, for some, is beginning a sentence with a conjunction. This is quite common in Canadian English. Some of you might have a big problem with that! Very different from how to say merry\marry\Mary! Or that Americans have a problem with dropping u's from words (colour not color!)

Ok, so I consider myself a grammar/English/usage policeman. I correct my kids all the time. They typically ignore me. But, there’s a few things that bug the poop out of me. Anemones host clowns. Clowns do not host anemones. So if you say “what clowns will host this anemone?” you should be saying “will this anemone host this clown?”

Also, “I done went” is a huge pet peeve of mine. There are teachers around here that use phrases like that. I don’t get it.

I do understand what a pain it is to text and work on a tablet and still spell and punctuate properly. I abbreviate often and I can forgive much. I do, however, see stuff that makes my skin crawl.

So what English/grammar/usage errors do find most offensive?

My last girlfriend was studying for her doctorate in english. We had so many debates on this subject. My position was language is a form of communicating, first and foremost. Her's was, language is an art form.
Ironically, that difference of opinion wasn't the issue of our breakup. It actually kept us together. And I miss those passionate/ respectful debates.

Proper pronunciation, punctuation and spelling was drummed into me at a young age. I used to hate bad language, but I'm getting more tolerable about it. Except when someone wants to argue a fact. If I see you can't spell, punctuate or pronounce? I consider the argument lost. I don't care if you do know more about something than I do. It's how I was raised. Don't bash me for that.

I said some things earlier too that I tried to edit but I waited too long... But Dan the difference is you seem to care about it and are working on it. That is all anyone can ask. At the end of the day everyone does some things great and some things terribly. I like to think my English is pretty good when I want it to be, but I bet you can lay a floor a heck of a lot better than I can. What really matters is when people can recognize a shortcoming and work to improve it :).

Also I know for some people English is not their first language which I sometimes forget. I don't know any other languages so the fact someone knows at least two is admirable, especially considering English makes no sense a lot of the time and is difficult to learn.

I am a 50-year-old man with a six grade education it’s a long story about why but there’s no need to get into that. I find this thread so offensive I already feel bad about not having a good education.I sure didn’t expect to come on R2R and be ridiculed.I do realize this thread isn’t directed at me but it is very hurtful to people like me.I am not trying to pick a fight with anybody in anyway just had to get it off my chest. My father is one of the smartest men around... Kyle (@HotRocks) as well. Grammar? Spelling? Forget it.

We aren’t all good at everything, we lack or excel in one area or another — but we are all great. Thank goodness the world isn’t full of OCD people that whine about spelling and grammar like me! ;)

Yup, learned is correct English, but if the learner feels like they were say; “an imbecile” before they learned something, the use of “learnt” would be a clever use of poetic language like Bill Shakespeare was famous for doing.
Failure to gather this may indicate a lack of appreciation of these finer linguistic nuisances perhaps?

That aside, I got an education on the streets and in the school district of Los Angeles way back when. It did not help that I have dyslexia and as I get older I can’t see what I wrote much less what autocorrect changed for me.

Going forward:
If I ever get on your nerves with my bad spelling and strange grammar I hope you’ll take comfort in the fact that from where you sit you can’t and don’t have to smell my unwashed carcass or the full skimmer cup on my reef.
I’ll bathe and empty the cup tonight in your honor, and hope you will be able to withstand my English offensives when they happen.
