English, grammar, usage....arghhhhh!

Ok, so I consider myself a grammar/English/usage policeman. I correct my kids all the time. They typically ignore me. But, there’s a few things that bug the poop out of me. Anemones host clowns. Clowns do not host anemones. So if you say “what clowns will host this anemone?” you should be saying “will this anemone host this clown?”

Also, “I done went” is a huge pet peeve of mine. There are teachers around here that use phrases like that. I don’t get it.

I do understand what a pain it is to text and work on a tablet and still spell and punctuate properly. I abbreviate often and I can forgive much. I do, however, see stuff that makes my skin crawl.

So what English/grammar/usage errors do find most offensive?

I especially like how a phone auto corrects anemone to enema. At least they always blame the phone.

I dislike when you see someone spelling longer and usually incorrectly spelled words followed by deliberately improperly spelled words.

For example:
“I was going to go to the store tomorrow for broccoli, but ur going anyways so I’ll stay.”

Maybe it’s just me and my hatred of “ur” and failure to correctly use “your” and “you’re”, but in the case of the sentence I laid out, why even spell “tomorrow”? Why even spell at all.

Probably just me though. :)
Also autocorroect doesn’t always do people justice, so there is that to keep in mind as well.

There are lots of grammar mistakes that irritate me. However, "grammar police" tend to really irritate me.

There are so many reasons why folks make grammatical errors, whether it be poor English skills, interface issues (using a phone keyboard, for instance) and just plain laziness. It's the last one that irritates me the most. Lack of effort to communicate clearly feels rude, and I will generally ignore a post if it looks like someone didn't feel like putting in the effort to communicate. But poor grammar alone doesn't bother me that much - you should see my pitiful efforts when I write to my French and Italian friends and colleagues!

Around R2R, I have to agree that who hosts whom drives me buggy. It is so prevalent, that I actually looked it up to see if there were some "Marine Exception" to the logic here when I first got into the hobby.

Misspelled words bug me, especially now! Auto-correct will suggest the correct spelling 90% of the time. That said, auto-correct sometimes replaces the correct word with an incorrect word.

The usual suspects: they're, their, and there. And one that bugs the living daylights out of me, but more in speech than in writing, is February. It's FebROOary, not FebYOUary.

Thanks for the opportunity to rant... I feel better now!

I used to be bothered by this stuff. But the point is to communicate and the brain seems to have amazing abilities to ignore the rules and let that happen.

Some days my English skills are poorer than people on here from around the world where it is a second, third or forth language. I envy them and hold them in awe.

Being in the chemistry field it bugs me to no end to see people say PH instead of pH. PH to me is powerhead. Also the whole clown hosting anemone thing bugs me too.

I agree that there are many reasons why someone might type things incorrectly. Yet, I’m stunned by the number of people that say things that are so blatantly wrong, even when they are well educated and should know better. By the way, I just use “grammar police” to make a point.

I agree. People that speak English as a second or third (or more) language are not included in this conversation. My daughter has a degree in Foreign Language and Literature. She has taught English as a second language. I, on the other hand, am totally confused by other languages. I envy those people that are multilingual.
