I have a 125 gallon SPS dominated tank (mostly small colonies and frags at this point) and I'm wondering if my lighting levels are sufficient. I've begun to see some signs of browning in my SPS and I'm trying to take the necessary steps to bring coloration back. Polyp extension is very good on all corals I currently have an AquaMedic Ocean Light with 2 X 250W MH Phoenix 14k + 1 X 54W Coralife Daylight T5 + 1 x 54W Coralife Actinic T5 placed about 8 inches above the water. It is very bright, but I'm not sure what my PAR levels are. I have the AquaMedic comination ballast driving all lights.

I'm currently at 5.06 watts per gallon.

All water parameters are very stable and within perfect ranges. Corals are fed 2x per week with Oyster Feast, Cyclopeeze, and Mysis, so I don't think water conditions or feeding are part of the problem.

I'm wondering how much new, individual electronic/digital ballasts (Ice Cap or other) will help, if at all.

My other option would be to add more T5s like this on the front and back of the Ocean Light to add 208 more watts of T5s: T5 Sun Beam dual high-output - Multiple wattage HQI bulb combination - Aqua Medic

This would give me nearly 7 watts per gallon. Radiums are not an option at this point.

That sounds like enough light to me. How are your Nitrates? That will cause browning too.

Don't think in watts per gallon, it means nothing whatsoever. I mean 50 watts of MH is NOTHING similar to 50 watts of PC, or 50 watts of T5, or even 50 watts of incandescent bulb. None of them equate. It is a measure that became popular many years ago, but really has no use.

Parameters:

Ph: 8.15
Temp: 77 - 79
Ca: 440
Alk: 8.6 dKh
Mag: 1500
Nitrates: 0
Ammonia: 0
Phosphate: 0

20 Gallon refugium with DSB & Chaeto and Algae Turf Scrubber. Also have 2 x Vortech MP40w on full Reefcrest.
