Epoxy Inside Aquarium Stand

Hey guys,

So I decided to finish a new pine stand I had built for a new aquarium set up. I stained and poly the outside, came out nice. Inside I decided to give Pond Shield a shot based on some reviews. Unfortunately I must of did something wrong as the finish was blotchy. It covered everything completely, but isn't very pleasing to the eye. I lightly sanded the inside of the doors with the Pond Shield on it and applied some Appliance Paint from a spray can. I went this route as its was a pain to apply the Pond Shield, and I didn't want to do a 2nd coating with it. The flat long parts were ok, but the vertical boards etc was a pain. The appliance paint so far on the doors over the Pond Shield look good, seemed to have dried ok. My question is do you think there will be an adhering problem? The pics are after 1 coat of pond shield, prior to applkyting the appliance paint.

I also emailed Pond Armor, but unfortunately their rep lacked people skills. All he kept telling me over and over again is not to use any other product in my stand, they are all very toxic to fish and won't hold up under water. I repeatedly told him the water for my system won't be making contact with the epoxy/painted surface inside the stand unless there is a spill, so my fish won't be exposed to it. I was just looking for a recommendation for a type of paint that would adhere well to the Pond Shield epoxy. He was just super insistent it was a bad idea because of how toxic other parts are. He was very rude about it also. Anyhow, any feedback would be appreciated. I rather finish the inside of my stand with the appliance paint instead of the head ache of re applying my Pond Shield.

If you didn’t sand the doors before you applied the appliance epoxy, you might have an adhesion problem, but you might not, you need to remember, most spray paint is only about 2-3 ounces of paint in a 16 ounce can, the rest is propellants and dryers.

Thanks for the response. I did lightly sand the epoxy on the doors. The appliance paint seems to have adhered very nicely to the pond armor on the doors. As soon as I get some time I will finish up the rest. Not real pretty but will do the job.

Does the Pond Armor have a dry time or recoat time listed? If you waited long enough for it to offgas, there shouldn't be an adhesion problem.

Always use a sealer before laying down a finish, especially on Chinese ply with all the formaldehyde that is used in the glue. Once the sealer is dry, scuff the finish to knock down the raised nibs, also the scuff gives next layer can adhere to. A good finish is not a one coat deal;) FYI also laying down a oil finish over a water based finish will also cause problems of moister, which means bubbles or a blotchy finish.:)

I used white appliance epoxy in my canopy and it has worked beautifully and held up perfect for 4 years. I am also refinishing the stand for my new tank and I intend to coat the entire stand interior with it as well. I’ll also be applying silicone to every joint as well to ensure the stand stays totally water proof on the inside and doesn’t deteriorate like I’ve had stands so in the past

Thanks for the responses. I finally got around to finishing the inside of the stand yesterday. The appliance pain seems to have went on nicely over the pond armor.

Looking to do the same exact thing. Only want to use one product though. Three years later, how is this holding up?
