Equipment Research Question

A little background for this topic. I am working on getting a BS in accounting from the college I am attending. I am taking Intermediate Accounting II course and working on a project for that is comparing and contrasting depreciation methods. This the first part of the paragraph is probably striking fear in just about everyone because of all the math that is involved, fear not.

When we think of our tank systems as a factory that has multiple parts that we need to maintain in order for livestock to survive. We have the tank, stand, pumps, skimmers, uv sterilizers, pipes, lighting, and other essential equipment to keep it in working harmony. The next part we think about is the cost of each item and as we know, can be super expensive but is all relative to the equipment we use.

Now the math part. To keep this simple, companies use a method called straight-line depreciation (example: paid $200, expected to use it for 4 years, and no resale value. Take 200/4 = 50 of value removed each year until it has no value left. Then time to get a new equipment).

For this I am looking to try to figure out an average of life for the equipment we use to maintain the tanks. Below is a list of items that are the most relevant to my project. I am looking for few things in responses: how long you want to keep the item (say for 3 years then upgrade to new model) and what would you expect to resell it for? I have included the cost next to them for a reference point on price.

I'm not using any of the other specific items you listed.

4 STAGE VALUE RO/DI SYSTEM - 150; Wouldn't expect to replace for 10+ years except wear items like filters, resin, o-rings, maybe metal bracket from eventual rust.

Neptune Systems APEX CONTROLLER SYSTEM - 800; The same as any tech would hope to get 5-10 years before completely outdated, and needed replaced.

300W NEO-THERM SUBMERSIBLE HEATER - 140; Want to get 2 years to balance cost vs other heaters.

VORTECH MP40WQD QUIETDRIVE PROPELLER PUMP - 350; As with any type of pump I would think it should be built well enough to hit 5 years.

Pentair Aquatics SMART UV 18 WATT - 350; Same as RO/DI system except ballast replace 3-5 years.

I use these items, and what I have listed is what I expect from them. Personally I don't like to sell older equipment due to many peoples unreasonable expectations. I donate them when I upgrade to LFS to use or sell.
