Filter socks are the most convenient form of mechanical filtration. They remove excess food, detritus, organic waste, dust, and other particulates. Removing these particulates from the water column will reduce the amount of organic matter that produces ammonia and other undesirable substances in the aquarium. Filter socks also help prevent larger objects, such as sand, crabs, snails, etc. from damaging pump motors. Regular filter sock use will lower organic levels and result in CRYSTAL CLEAR WATER! info

i use the mesh bags vs the fabric ones. Easier to clean and re-use. Have several pairs, change every 3-4 days...

I use them and love them. I get the same satisfaction from changing them out and seeing all the crud they collect as when I empty my skimmer collection cup.

I have used felt filter socks on previous tanks. They kept the water clear but I had to change them out every few days since they would clog and overflow with water. This time around I will be using mesh socks. They are easier to clean and are harder to clog.

Are you talking about putting one on the return from the skimmer? If so, I have a very small footprint and do not have room.

No, put the filter socks on before any of your equipment so the socks can catch all of the gunk, shells, snails etc.. before it gets to your pumps.

If your socks clog......get bigger ones. I use the 7" socks and 1 will last me a week! If I run 2 at a time then it lasts me 2 weeks! CPR sells a great sock holder that fits on any DIY sump. I highly recommend them!

What kind of mesh socks are you guys using? I am very interested. What micron are they? or is it just a large media bag, because that really won't catch what I want it to.

Have socks on my new 180. Used a floss pad on my old 92, never going back .... Found a bristle worm in my sock today when I changed them.

I'm not a fan either. Maybe mine were too small but always made a mess one way or another.
