I love the smoking chamber right above the fire box. That's a smart design. Does it seal off from the rest of the pit?

Yes it has a rod that moves a plate inside.. you can use it as a warming cabinet or pull the rod and it becomes a vertical smoker.. check out Black warrior smokers. This is the creek model..
