External Ghost Overflow

Like the one by Synergy Reef or by Reef Savvy, what do you think about this and is it possible to do some service to the external piece if the rear of the tank is close to the wall?
I am considering a new build, and like to find out anyone experience this type of overflow and is it worth the price in the long run.
