Good day,

I have a 74g tower with a s n all sump (fyi 24x24 cubes are the worst layout ever). My sump is to small for any decent insump skimmer. So I am going external-
Going with either reef octopus 170ext or reef octopus 200ext. Is there a down side of having skimmer rated 2-3times for what youreally system is?

I have about 90 gallons total and feed heavy.thanks

There is downside, it might pull to much of the beneficial bacteria out of the water, and there is upside, the water will get filtered faster.
I used an oversized reef octopus on a system and loved the results. You can always put it on a timer if you feel like it is pulling to much out of your system.
