Extremely large custom aquarium, thoughts and challenges?

So I saw this posted on my LFS Instagram today. They seem to be working on a very large custom aquarium that is being built in as the house is being constructed. They've gone for fake corals it seems because I assume this will be FOWLER and lighting to grow corals at this depth may either be very unachievable or too bright to be practical?

What are your thoughts on projects like these? What are some of the key challenges? How do you manage keeping it clean and servicing it? Would they be difficult? How much does upkeep cost? Just curious to hear everyones thought.

Polo reef does it. It is a massive undertaking and operation. They also do it with real coral not the fake stuff. Check out their youtube, they recently posted a video on the process of building it.

I would guess the main reason to use fake corals is the client wants non reef safe fish. Fake corals are harder to keep clean than real imo way bigger pita. Don't think it has much todo with lighting, cool tank!

The fact that he did it outdoors probably solves the lighting issue! But probably cost him a ton in heating or cooling depending on where he is!

Where I am it reaches 50 degrees celcius in the summer, thats 122 farenhiet for the Americans. I have a 40 gallon in my living room and have my aircon running 24/7 in the summer and my chiller still turns on about once every 2 to 3 hours.

I would never recommend a large built-in project like this to anyone unless you are extremely wealthy like Polo Reef. The operating costs are enormous and your ability to modify the system to address problems can become very difficult. Trying to sell a house with one can be almost impossible. Life changes and you or someone in your family will eventually be faced with how to remove the tank.

One of the reasons I built my stock tank lagoon is I hate cleaning the glass everyday. To me just keeping the front of my 180gal clean is a PITA. Keeping large tank like that clean is equal to having a part time job.

The walls inside are covered in special epoxy which seals the concrete and creates a water barrier.
